In plain words

With my two hands pressed together, I ask for just one thing, and if You are willing, it is mine.

That gift is this: that with every breath I take I remember You, and all day long I get to sing Your praises.

The one gift worth asking for is to remember the One with every breath.
The deeper layer

With folded hands, the singer asks for just one gift.

Du-ay kar jorh maaga-o ik daanaa — with both hands pressed together, I ask for one gift. And the gift the singer asks for is remembering the One.

Saas saas naanak aaraaDhay — with every breath, Nanak loves and adores You. Aath pahar gun gaavaa — for all eight pahar, the eight watches of the day, I sing Your praises. In other words, all day and all night.

Think of how a phone stays on WiFi in the background all day. You do not keep switching it on. The singer wants remembering to be like that, always quietly on.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for one thing and know you would get it, what would it be?
