Raag Soohee, Shabad 79 - With You Watching Over Me

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
soohee mehlaa 5.
Soohee, Fifth Mehl:
ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸੋ ਦੁਖੁ ਕੈਸਾ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
jis kay sir oopar tooN su-aamee so dukh kaisaa paavai.
When You stand over our heads, O Lord and Master, how can we suffer in pain?
The mortal being does not know how to chant Your Name - he is intoxicated with the wine of Maya, and the thought of death does not even enter his mind. ||1||

In plain words

When You are watching over me, standing right above me, how could any hurt really break me?

It is the heart lost in chasing shiny things that forgets to sing Your Name - dazzled, it forgets that this life is precious and does not last.

With the One watching over me, no hurt can truly break me.
The deeper layer

When the One is watching over you, nothing can truly break you.

Jis kay sir oopar too su-aamee so dukh kaisaa paavai — when You, Master, stand over someone's head, how could they suffer? It is a picture of protection, like a parent holding an umbrella over a child in the rain.

The next line says why people still feel lost. Maa-i-aa mad maataa — they are dazed by Maya, as if by strong drink. Maya means the pull of shiny things that do not last. Marnaa cheet na aavai — the thought of death never enters their mind. This is not meant to scare anyone. It gently reminds us that life is short and precious. It is a call to wake up and live it well.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel watched over and safe?
