Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You belong to those who love You, and they belong to You - it goes both ways, a bond that holds.

So the one who serves You has nothing to be afraid of; not even death can come close.

Belonging to the One, the heart has nothing left to fear.
The deeper layer

The One and the good belong to each other, so there is nothing to fear.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Too santaa kaa sant tayray — You belong to the sants, and the sants belong to You. A sant is a good, loving person who lives close to the One. The belonging goes both ways, like a family where everyone knows they are wanted.

Tayray sayvak ka-o bha-o kichh naahee — Your servant is not afraid of anything. Jam nahee aavai nayray — even Jam, the messenger of death, cannot come near. When you know you belong, fear loses its grip. A child holding a parent's hand walks through a dark parking lot without a worry.

A Question to Sit With

What makes you feel unafraid, even of big things?
