Verse 3 of 5

The Mind Is the Scale, Love Is the Weighing

ਮਨੁ ਤਾਰਾਜੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਤੁਲਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਸੇਵ ਸਰਾਫੁ ਕਮਾਵਾ ॥
man taaraajee chit tulaa tayree sayv saraaf kamaavaa.
Mind is the scale, consciousness the weights, and the performance of Your service is the appraiser.
ਘਟ ਹੀ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਸੋ ਸਹੁ ਤੋਲੀ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਰਹਾਵਾ ॥੨॥
ghat hee bheetar so saho tolee in biDh chit rahaavaa. ||2||
Deep within my heart, I weigh my Husband Lord; in this way I focus my consciousness. ||2||

In plain words

So let my mind be the scale, my attention the weights, and loving service the way I measure.

Deep in my own heart I hold the Beloved and let my whole attention rest there. That is where You are found.

The One is weighed not with tools but with a loving, attentive heart.
The deeper layer

You can't weigh the One on an outside scale, but you can hold the One inside your own heart.

Guru Nanak turns the whole picture inward. Man taaraajee — let my mind be the scale. Chit tulaa — let my attention be the weights. Tayree sayv saraaf kamaavaa — and let loving service be the expert who judges.

Ghat hee bheetar so saho tolee — "Deep in my own heart, I weigh my Beloved." In biDh chit rahaavaa — "This is how I keep my attention steady."

Think of how you know you love your family. No ruler or scale tells you. You just feel it inside. The measuring happens in the heart.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you turn your attention gently inward?
