You Keep Company With the Smallest Wanderer

ਅੰਧੁਲਾ ਨੀਚ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਰਦੇਸੀ ਖਿਨੁ ਆਵੈ ਤਿਲੁ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
anDhulaa neech jaat pardaysee khin aavai til jaavai.
The blind, low class wandering soul, comes for a moment, and departs in an instant.
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਰਹਦਾ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਮੂੜਾ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੪॥੨॥੯॥
taa kee sangat naanak rahdaa ki-o kar moorhaa paavai. ||4||2||9||
In its company, Nanak dwells; how can the fool attain the Lord? ||4||2||9||

In plain words

The soul is like a small wanderer, passing through — here for a moment, gone the next, with no rank or name the world would notice.

I keep humble company with that little traveler, knowing a heart as small as mine could never reach You on its own. Only Your kindness can close the gap.

No heart is too small or too low for the One's kindness to reach.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak humbly says: the soul is a small traveler, and only the One's kindness can bring it home.

AnDhulaa neech jaat pardaysee — the soul is like a little traveler far from home. It can't see well, and the world gives it no rank at all. Neech jaat means "low birth." Here it is the world's way of ranking, and Nanak sets himself right beside the one ranked lowest.

Khin aavai til jaavai — it comes for a moment and is gone in an instant. Think of a snowflake landing on your mitten and melting.

Taa kee sangat naanak rahdaa — Nanak says he keeps company with that small wanderer. Ki-o kar moorhaa paavai — how can such a foolish one reach You? His hands are empty, and his only answer is grace.

A Question to Sit With

When has someone shown you kindness even when you felt small?
