Once You Meet the Dyer

ਰੰਗੇ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਰੰਗੀਐ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥
rangay kaa ki-aa rangee-ai jo ratay rang laa-ay jee-o.
How can one who is already dyed in the color of the Lord's Love, be colored any other color?
ਰੰਗਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
rangan vaalaa sayvee-ai sachay si-o chit laa-ay jee-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
So serve God the Dyer, and focus your consciousness on the True Lord. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Once a cloth is truly, deeply colored, no other dye can take over — it is already what it is. A heart is like that too.

So I turn toward the One who does the real coloring, the true Dyer, and give my attention there. Everything else is just borrowed tint.

Turn toward the true Dyer, and lesser colors lose their grip.
The deeper layer

Once you are colored by the One's love, nothing else can change your color.

This is the "Rahao," the pause line at the center of the shabad. Rangay kaa ki-aa rangee-ai: how can you dye cloth that is already fully dyed? It is already deep with color.

Rangan vaalaa sayvee-ai: so serve the Dyer, the One who colors hearts with lasting love. Sachay si-o chit laa-ay: keep your mind on the True One.

Think of a cloth soaked in deep blue ink. Splash a little orange juice on it, and it stays blue. A heart filled with the One is like that.

A Question to Sit With

What deserves your deepest attention, more than passing things?
