Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 82
Verse 3 of 9

Rest You Cannot Find by Running

chaaray kundaa jay bhaveh bin bhaagaa Dhan naahi jee-o.
You wander around in the four directions, but without the good fortune of destiny, you shall never obtain wealth.
If you are plundered by corruption and vice, you shall wander around, but like a fugitive, you shall find no place of rest.
gur raakhay say ubray sabad ratay man maahi jee-o. ||2||
Only those who are protected by the Guru are saved; their minds are attuned to the Word of the Shabad. ||2||

In plain words

I could run in every direction chasing what I want and still come home empty, because the real treasure is not found by racing around.

What actually steadies me is being held by the teaching, letting its words settle into my mind. That is where the restlessness finally quiets.

Peace is not something you catch by running in every direction.
The deeper layer

Running everywhere does not bring the real treasure.

Chaaray kundaa jay bhaveh: even if you wander in all four directions, you do not find the true wealth. The verse says a person robbed by their own faults keeps wandering and finds no place to rest.

Picture running around the whole mall looking for your lost phone, when it was in your backpack all along. You just get tired.

Gur raakhay say ubray: the ones the Guru protects are safe. Their minds are sabad ratay, dyed in the Shabad, the Guru's Word. That is where the running stops and rest begins.

A Question to Sit With

When have you run around chasing something you already had inside?
