Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 82
Verse 8 of 9

Pulled Two Ways

ਗਾਫਲ ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
gaafal gi-aan vihooni-aa gur bin gi-aan na bhaal jee-o.
O careless one, you are totally lacking any wisdom; do not seek wisdom without the Guru.
ਖਿੰਚੋਤਾਣਿ ਵਿਗੁਚੀਐ ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਦੁਇ ਨਾਲਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
khinchotaan viguchee-ai buraa bhalaa du-ay naal jee-o.
By indecision and inner conflict, you shall come to ruin. Good and bad both pull at you.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਭੈ ਰਤਿਆ ਸਭ ਜੋਹੀ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ਜੀਉ ॥੭॥
bin sabdai bhai rati-aa sabh johee jamkaal jee-o. ||7||
Without being attuned to the Word of the Shabad and the Fear of God, all come under the gaze of the Messenger of Death. ||7||

In plain words

When I try to figure everything out alone, I get tugged back and forth — a little good on one side, a little not-so-good on the other — and I wear myself out.

What settles the tug-of-war is the teaching. With it, I stop being yanked around and start walking a steady line.

Without an anchor, you get pulled two ways at once; the teaching steadies you.
The deeper layer

Without the Guru, we get pulled two ways at once.

Gaafal gi-aan vihooni-aa: a careless mind is empty of wisdom. Gur bin gi-aan na bhaal: so do not look for wisdom without the Guru.

Khinchotaan viguchee-ai, buraa bhalaa du-ay naal: in a tug-of-war, we fall apart, with good and bad pulling at us together. Think of a rope pulled by two teams. The rope in the middle never gets to rest.

The verse says that without the Shabad and a loving respect for the One, everyone is left unanchored. The Guru's Word ends the tug-of-war and gives us a steady path.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt pulled between two choices, and what helped you decide?
