The Support of Those With No Support

jin kar kaaran Dhaari-aa sabhsai day-ay aaDhaar jee-o.
He who created the creation and sustains it, gives sustenance to all.
so ki-o manhu visaaree-ai sadaa sadaa daataar jee-o.
How can you forget Him from your mind? He is the Great Giver, forever and ever.
naanak naam na veesrai niDhaaraa aaDhaar jee-o. ||8||1||2||
Nanak shall never forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the Support of the unsupported. ||8||1||2||

In plain words

The same One who made everything also holds it up and feeds it, every single day, without stopping. How could I let that slip from my mind?

So I hold on to the Name — the living presence of the One — because it is the ground under the feet of anyone who feels they have no ground at all.

The One who made everything is the ground beneath anyone who feels groundless.
The deeper layer

How could we ever forget the One who holds everyone up?

Jin kar kaaran Dhaari-aa: the One made the whole creation and keeps it going. Sabhsai day-ay aaDhaar: the One gives support to everyone.

So ki-o manhu visaaree-ai: how can we forget such a Giver, who gives forever and ever?

The Guru prays never to forget the Name. It is niDhaaraa aaDhaar, the support of those who have no support. This is one of Gurbani's most tender names for the One. Think of a hand that is always there to hold, even when everyone else has let go.

A Question to Sit With

Who has been a support to you when you felt you had none?
