A Stranger to Yourself

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣਾ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਰੰਗੁ ਹੈ ॥
manmukh bharam bhulaanaa naa tis rang hai.
The self-willed manmukh wanders around, deluded by doubt; he does not enshrine love for the Lord.
ਮਰਸੀ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਡਾਣਾ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਭੰਗੁ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
marsee ho-ay vidaanaa man tan bhang hai. ||6||
He dies as a stranger to his own self, and his mind and body are spoiled. ||6||

In plain words

When someone lives turned only toward themselves, chasing their own restless wants, they drift through life a little lost — and never quite meet the love that was right there.

In the end they leave this world a stranger to their own heart. Their mind and body are worn down.

Living only for yourself can make you a stranger to your own heart.
The deeper layer

This one describes a person who has lost touch with their own heart. It is a condition to grow out of, not a label for anyone.

A manmukh is someone turned only toward their own wants. Manmukh bharam bhulaanaa means such a person wanders, lost in bharam, confusion and doubt. Naa tis rang hai means there is no rang, no color of love, in them.

Marsee ho-ay vidaanaa means they leave this life vidaanaa, a stranger to their own self.

Think of living in a house for years without ever opening one of its rooms. That room is still yours, waiting. The way back, through the Guru's teaching, is always open.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel at home in yourself again when you feel lost?
