Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 88
Verse 13 of 35

How the Cloudy Meets the Clear

ਮਨੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
man mailaa sach nirmalaa ki-o kar mili-aa jaa-ay.
The mind is impure; only the True Lord is pure. So how can it merge into Him?
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਤਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇ ॥੧੨॥
parabh maylay taa mil rahai ha-umai sabad jalaa-ay. ||12||
God merges it into Himself, and then it remains merged; through the Word of His Shabad, the ego is burnt away. ||12||

In plain words

Sometimes my mind feels cloudy and tangled, while what's real feels so clear and clean — and I wonder how the two could ever come together.

But I don't have to scrub myself perfect first. When I let the true Word in, the ego (haumai — the feeling that I'm a separate, cut-off self) quietly melts, and the meeting happens on its own.

You don't have to make yourself perfect first — the meeting is given.
The deeper layer

man mailaa sach nirmalaa, ki-o kar mili-aa jaa-ay — the mind is clouded, the True is clear; how can they meet? prabh maylay taa mil rahai, haumai sabad jalaa-ay — the meeting is granted, not self-manufactured, and haumai (ego, the sense of being separate) is dissolved by the Word.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt close to something good even though you weren't feeling your best?
