The Weight We Carry

ha-umai mailaa jag firai mar jammai vaaro vaar.
The world wanders around in the filth of egotism; it dies, and is re-born, over and again.
pa-i-ai kirat kamaavanaa ko-ay na maytanhaar. ||19||
He acts in accordance with the karma of his past actions, which no one can erase. ||19||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The world wanders around stained with ego (haumai — the feeling of being a separate self); it dies and is born again, over and over.

It acts by what its past deeds have set in motion, and no one can erase that.

Ego keeps the world circling, and past deeds keep their hold.
The deeper layer

haumai mailaa jag firai — the world wanders weighed down by ego; pa-i-ai kirat kamaavnaa — we act by the momentum of past deeds (kirat), the thread of karma. Each round of action sets the next one moving.
