What You Can Actually Take With You

ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਚਲੈ ਨ ਚਲਦਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
su-inaa rupaa paap kar kar sanchee-ai chalai na chaldi-aa naal.
Gold and silver may be earned by committing sins, but they will not go with you when you die.
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲਸੀ ਸਭ ਮੁਠੀ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥੨੭॥
vin naavai naal na chalsee sabh muthee jamkaal. ||27||
Nothing will go with you in the end, except the Name; all are plundered by the Messenger of Death. ||27||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A person can pile up gold and silver, even by cutting corners, but not a coin of it comes along when this life is over.

Only one thing stays with me all the way through: the Name — the living presence of the One I've kept in my heart. So that's the treasure worth gathering.

Only the Name goes with you all the way; gather that.
The deeper layer

su-inaa rupaa paap kar kar sanchee-ai, chalai na chaldi-aa naal — gold and silver gathered by wrongdoing do not follow at death; vin naavai naal na chalsee — nothing goes along except the Name. A memento-mori softened toward the positive: gather what actually stays.

A Question to Sit With

If you could only keep one thing forever, what would you want it to be?
