The Nectar That Ends the Thirst

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਭੁ ਹੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਰਸੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਸੁ ਰਸਕੇ ॥
raam naam sabh hai raam naamaa ras gurmat ras raskay.
The Lord's Name is all. The Lord's Name is the essence of the Guru's Teachings, the juice, the sweetness of it.
ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਭ ਲਾਥੀ ਤਿਸ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ॥੩॥
har amrit har jal paa-i-aa sabh laathee tis tis kay. ||3||
I have found the Ambrosial Nectar, the Divine Water of the Lord's Name, and all my thirst for it is quenched. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Name is everything — it is the whole sweetness at the center of the Guru's teaching.

I found it like finding pure water after a long dry road, and now the thirst that chased me for so long is simply gone.

What you were truly thirsty for was never a thing — it was the One.
The deeper layer

The Name is the rarest treasure and the simplest need, both at once.

Guru Ram Das says the Name is everything. It is the sweet center of the Guru's teaching.

Then he names two things together. Amrit is the nectar that gives life that never ends. Jal is plain water. Har amrit har jal paa-i-aa — "I found the nectar, I found the water."

Think of fresh water after a long, dusty walk. It is ordinary, and yet at that moment it is worth more than gold. The Name is like that. It fills you all the way, and the old thirst is gone.

A Question to Sit With

What have you chased that never quite filled you up?
