The Sat Sangat, the True Congregation of the True Guru, is sublime and exalted. They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord God.

Bless me with Your Mercy, Lord, and unite me with the Sat Sangat; I wash the feet of Your humble servants. ||2||

In plain words

The best company I can keep is the gathering of people who love and sing the One together.

Bring me into that circle. I would gladly serve them, even wash the dust from their feet — being near them is that precious to me.

The company you keep shapes the songs your heart learns to sing.
The deeper layer

Guru Ram Das doesn't ask for a special place among good people. He just asks to be let in.

The sat sangat is the gathering of people who sing and love the One together. He calls it the best company there is.

Ham Dhovah pag jan kay — "I would wash the feet of Your people." Long ago, washing someone's feet was the humblest job in the house. It was also a happy way to serve a guest you loved.

Think of a kid who would happily carry the water bottles, just to sit on the bench with a team they love. Being near them is the prize.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people who bring out the best in you?
