Verse 16 of 33

Like Needing Water to Live

ji-o paraanee jal bin hai martaa ti-o sikh gur bin mar jaa-ee. ||15||
Just as the mortal dies without water, so does the Sikh die without the Guru. ||15||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Just as a living thing cannot last without water, a Sikh cannot live without the Guru.

Some things are as basic to your inner life as water is to your body.
The deeper layer

ji-o praanee jal bin hai martaa, ti-o sikh gur bin mar jaa-ee — as a being dies without water, the Sikh withers without the Guru. Need at the level of survival: the Guru as the very element one lives in.

A Question to Sit With

What's something you need that isn't food or water, but feels just as necessary?
