Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 90
Verse 3 of 33

In Joy and in Pain, Still You

ਜੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਤ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਅਰਾਧੀ ਦੁਖਿ ਭੀ ਤੁਝੈ ਧਿਆਈ ॥੨॥
jay sukh deh ta tujheh araaDhee dukh bhee tujhai Dhi-aa-ee. ||2||
If You will bless me with happiness, then I will worship and adore You. Even in pain, I will meditate on You. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When life is sweet and things go well, I turn to the One with a full and grateful heart.

And when life is hard and it hurts, I turn to that same One just as much. My love doesn't switch off when the weather changes.

Real love holds steady through both the good days and the hard ones.
The deeper layer

jay sukh dehi ta tujheh araadhee, dukh bhee tujhai dhi-aa-ee — in comfort I adore You, and in pain I hold You just the same. Love that is steady across both conditions — the equipoise (sahaj) of a devotion not bought by good fortune.

A Question to Sit With

Is it easier to be grateful when things go well or when they go badly? Why?
