Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 90
Verse 4 of 33

Full Even When Empty-Handed

ਜੇ ਭੁਖ ਦੇਹਿ ਤ ਇਤ ਹੀ ਰਾਜਾ ਦੁਖ ਵਿਚਿ ਸੂਖ ਮਨਾਈ ॥੩॥
jay bhukh deh ta it hee raajaa dukh vich sookh manaa-ee. ||3||
Even if You give me hunger, I will still feel satisfied; I am joyful, even in the midst of sorrow. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Even when I'm left wanting, with less than I wished for, something in me can still feel full and content.

I can find a quiet gladness right in the middle of a hard time — because the thing I lean on isn't what I happen to have that day.

You can feel full even when your hands are empty.
The deeper layer

jay bhukh dehi ta it hee raajaa, dukh vich sookh manaa-ee — even given hunger, I feel like a king; in sorrow I find contentment. Fullness that does not depend on circumstance — the inner sufficiency of a heart anchored beyond its conditions.

A Question to Sit With

What makes you feel content that has nothing to do with what you own?
