Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 90
Verse 6 of 33

Glad to Do the Small Things

ਪਖਾ ਫੇਰੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਢੋਵਾ ਜੋ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਸੋ ਖਾਈ ॥੫॥
pakhaa fayree paanee dhovaa jo dayveh so khaa-ee. ||5||
I wave the fan over You, and carry water for You; whatever You give me, I take. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I'd happily do the plain, humble work — fanning away the heat, carrying the water — just to be near the One I love.

And whatever comes my way, I'll take it gladly. When love is real, even small acts of service feel like a gift.

When love is real, even small chores feel like a gift.
The deeper layer

pakhaa fayree paanee dhovaa, jo dayveh so khaa-ee — I would wave the fan and carry the water, and take gladly whatever is given. Humble seva: love expressed in ordinary, unglamorous service.

A Question to Sit With

What's a small, unglamorous thing you'd gladly do for someone you love?
