Empty-Handed at the Door

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗਰੀਬੁ ਢਹਿ ਪਇਆ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਲੈਹੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੬॥
naanak gareeb dheh pa-i-aa du-aarai har mayl laihu vadi-aa-ee. ||6||
Poor Nanak has fallen at the Lord's Door; please, O Lord, unite me with Yourself, by Your Glorious Greatness. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I come to the One's door with nothing to show and nothing to prove — just an open, empty-handed heart.

And I ask, simply: draw me close. It's not something I can earn; it's something freely given. So I just show up and ask.

You can come empty-handed and still be welcomed in.
The deeper layer

Nanak comes to the One's door with nothing, and asks to be taken in.

Naanak gareeb dheh pa-i-aa du-aarai — Nanak, poor and humble, has fallen at Your door. Gareeb means poor, with nothing to offer. This is honest empty-handedness, not putting oneself down.

Har mayl laihu vadi-aa-ee — please, Lord, join me to You, by Your vadi-aa-ee, Your greatness. Being close to the One is not a prize we win. It is a gift. Think of a grandparent opening the door. You do not need to bring anything. You are welcomed just because you came.

A Question to Sit With

When have you been welcomed even though you had nothing to offer?
