What All the Searching Taught Me

ਅਖੀ ਕਾਢਿ ਧਰੀ ਚਰਣਾ ਤਲਿ ਸਭ ਧਰਤੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਤ ਪਾਈ ॥੭॥
akhee kaadh Dharee charnaa tal sabh Dhartee fir mat paa-ee. ||7||
Taking out my eyes, I place them at Your Feet; after travelling over the entire earth, I have come to understand this. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I would lay down my very way of seeing at the One's feet. Let my old eyes give way to a truer sight.

I wandered far and searched everywhere. This is what finally became clear: what I was looking for was found in that closeness all along.

Long searching can teach you that what you wanted was near all along.
The deeper layer

After searching the whole world, the singer learns to give everything to the One.

The verse offers the One even the singer's own eyes, laid charnaa tal, at the One's feet. It is a strong picture of giving everything. It means laying down your old way of seeing things, so you can see more truly.

Sabh Dhartee fir mat paa-ee — after wandering the whole earth, I came to understand. Think of hunting all over the house for your glasses, then finding them on your own head. The long search teaches you that what you wanted was close all along.

A Question to Sit With

What's something you had to search hard for before you understood it?
