Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 90
Verse 10 of 33

Praise or Blame, I Stay

jay lok salaahay taa tayree upmaa jay nindai ta chhod na jaa-ee. ||9||
If people praise me, the praise is Yours. Even if they slander me, I will not leave You. ||9||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

If people say kind things about me, I know the good in me really came from the One — so the praise belongs there.

And if people put me down, I don't let go of the One because of it. What others say can't shake the thing my heart is rooted in.

What people say can't shake a heart rooted in something real.
The deeper layer

jay lok salaahay ta tayree upmaa, jay nindai ta chhod na jaa-ee — praise belongs to You, and slander does not make me leave You. The sahaj of a soul unshaken by praise or blame, rooted in something outside opinion.

A Question to Sit With

How much do other people's opinions move you, up or down?
