In Love With the Name Itself

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਕਾ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੇਉ ॥
satgur birhee naam kaa jay milai ta tan man day-o.
The True Guru is the Lover of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Meeting Him, I dedicate my body and mind to Him.
ਜੇ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਪੀਏਉ ॥੩॥
jay poorab hovai likhi-aa taa amrit sahj pee-ay-o. ||3||
And if it is so pre-ordained, then I shall automatically drink in the Ambrosial Nectar. ||3||

In plain words

The teaching is itself in love with the Name. It is so full of it that when I meet it, I want to give my whole self.

And when the moment is right, that sweetness comes to me naturally and easily. It is like drinking cool water when you're thirsty, with no forcing at all.

When the moment is right, the sweetest things come without forcing.
The deeper layer

The True Guru is in love with the Name, and that love is catching.

Satgur birhee naam kaa — the Guru is a birhee of the Name. A birhee is someone who longs for the one they love. Jay milai ta tan man day-o — "If I meet the Guru, I will give my body and mind."

Jay poorab hovai likhi-aa — "if it is written for me." Taa amrit sahj pee-ay-o — then I will drink the nectar in sahaj, easy and natural calm.

Think of a friend who loves music so much that you start humming along without trying. Even the Guru is drawn by love. And the gift arrives without forcing.

A Question to Sit With

What's something good that came to you easily, at just the right time?
