First Thought, Last Thought

ਸੁਤਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਉਠਦਿਆ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਲਾਉ ॥
suti-aa gur salaahee-ai uth-di-aa bhee gur aalaa-o.
Praise the Guru while you are asleep, and call on the Guru while you are up.
ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਹਉ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਧੋਵਾ ਪਾਉ ॥੪॥
ko-ee aisaa gurmukh jay milai ha-o taa kay Dhovaa paa-o. ||4||
If only I could meet such a Gurmukh; I would wash His Feet. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Falling asleep, I want the teaching on my mind; waking up, I want it to be my first thought too.

And if I met someone truly living it, I'd gladly do the humblest thing to serve them — that's how much I'd treasure their company.

Let what matters most be your first thought and your last.
The deeper layer

sutiaa gur salaahee-ai, uth-di-aa bhee gur aalaa-o — praise the teaching falling asleep and call on it waking; ha-o taa kay dhovaa paa-o — I would gladly serve one who lives it. Remembrance as the frame of the whole day, first thought and last.

A Question to Sit With

What's the first thing on your mind when you wake up?
