Shelter for the Ones Who Have Nothing

In plain words

I come and take shelter at the feet of the One — the One who is especially the friend of anyone who feels small, unnoticed, or without any power.

I do not have to be important or impressive to be welcome here. The lowly and the leaning are exactly who this shelter is for.

You do not have to be impressive to be welcome — this shelter is for the leaning.
The deeper layer

The One gives shelter to anyone who feels small.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It names the shelter the whole hymn rests in. Charan kamal sarnaa-ay naraa-in — I take saran, shelter, at the lotus feet of Naraa-in, the One. Deenaa naath — the One is the naath, the Master, of the deen, those who feel small or have nothing. Bhagat paraa-in — the One holds up those who love Him.

You do not have to be important to be welcome here. Think of a bus shelter on a rainy day. It does not check who you are. Anyone who needs it can step inside. This shelter is for everyone who leans on it.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you go, or who do you go to, when you feel small?
