Where Fear Cannot Reach You

ਅਨਾਥਾ ਨਾਥ ਭਗਤ ਭੈ ਮੇਟਨ ॥
anaathaa naath bhagat bhai maytan.
Master of the masterless, Patron of the forlorn, Eradicator of fear of His devotees.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਨ ਭੇਟਨ ॥੨॥
saaDhsang jamdoot na bhaytan. ||2||
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the Messenger of Death cannot even touch them. ||2||

In plain words

The One is the shelter for anyone who feels they have no shelter, the quiet calm that gently erases fear.

In the company of the wise-hearted, even the fear that usually creeps up on me finds it cannot reach me there.

In good company, the fear that usually creeps up on me cannot reach.
The deeper layer

The One shelters those with no shelter, and in good company, fear cannot reach us.

Anaathaa naath — the One is the naath, the Master and protector, of the anaath, those who have no one. Bhagat bhai maytan — the One maytan, wipes away, the bhai, the fear, of those who love Him.

SaaDhsang jamdoot na bhaytan — in the saaDhsang, the company of the holy, the jamdoot, the messenger of death, cannot touch them. The jamdoot can stand for fear itself, and good company makes fear melt. Think of walking home in the dark alone, and then a group of friends joins you. The street is the same, but the fear is gone.

A Question to Sit With

Who makes you feel safe enough that your worries quiet down?
