Verse 5 of 9

The Sweet Name on the Tongue

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਨ ਨਿਤ ਜਾਪੈ ॥
amrit naam rasan nit jaapai.
One who constantly chants the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam with his tongue,
ਰੋਗ ਰੂਪ ਮਾਇਆ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ॥੪॥
rog roop maa-i-aa na bi-aapai. ||4||
is not touched or affected by Maya, the embodiment of disease. ||4||

In plain words

When the Name — the living presence of the One — is sweet on my tongue and often in my mind, something changes.

The pull of grabbing and getting, which works on me like a sickness, just does not take hold the same way anymore.

Keeping the Name sweet on my tongue is like medicine for a grabbing mind.
The deeper layer

Keeping the sweet Name on your tongue protects you from the grabbing sickness of Maya.

Amrit naam rasan nit jaapai — someone repeats the amrit, the nectar-sweet Name, every day with their rasan, their tongue. Rog roop maa-i-aa na bi-aapai — then Maya, whose roop, or form, is rog, sickness, does not take them over. Maya is the pull of grabbing and getting.

Think of washing your hands before dinner. It keeps germs from making you sick. Keeping the Name close is like that for the mind. It keeps grabbing and getting from taking hold.

A Question to Sit With

What is a good thought or word you can keep close so a bad mood cannot take over?
