Verse 8 of 9

Made His Own — a Gift, Not a Wage

ਧਾਰਿ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕੀਨਾ ॥
Dhaar anoograhu apnaa parabh keenaa.
Showering His Mercy, God has made me His own;
ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਸੁ ਦੀਨਾ ॥੭॥
kayval naam bhagat ras deenaa. ||7||
He has blessed me with the unique and singular Naam, and the sublime essence of devotion. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Kindness poured down, and the One simply claimed me as belonging — not because I earned it, but freely.

Along with it came a quiet gift: the Name, and the joy of loving. That joy is not a payment. It is a present.

Belonging comes first as a gift; the joy of loving is the present inside it.
The deeper layer

The One made me His own as a free gift, and gave me the Name and the joy of love.

Dhaar anoograhu apnaa parabh keenaa — pouring down anoograhu, kindness, God made me apnaa, His own. Kayval naam bhagat ras deenaa — He gave the kayval, the one and only, Name, and the ras, the sweet taste, of bhagat, loving devotion.

Belonging comes first, as a gift. Think of a baby brought home from the hospital. The baby has done nothing yet, and already belongs to the family. Loving the One is the joy of that belonging. It is not the price we pay for it.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt you belonged somewhere before you had done anything to "earn" it?
