Verse 4 of 9

Carried by the Flow of Existence

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਆਇਆ ਚਲਣੁ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸੰਜੋਗਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
hukmay jug meh aa-i-aa chalan hukam sanjog jee-o.
By the Hukam of God's Will, they come into this world, and they leave upon receipt of His Hukam.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਕਰੇ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ਜੀਉ ॥
hukmay parpanch pasri-aa hukam karay ras bhog jee-o.
By His Hukam, the Expanse of the Universe is expanded. By His Hukam, they enjoy pleasures.
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਰਤਾ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਸੋਗੁ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
jis no kartaa visrai tiseh vichhorhaa sog jee-o. ||3||
One who forgets the Creator Lord, suffers sorrow and separation. ||3||

In plain words

Everything moves within the flow of existence — the flow of life itself. We arrive within it, we move within it, and the whole wide world unfolds within it. Within it, too, we enjoy life's good things.

When I forget the Source of that flow, I feel cut off and sad. When I remember it, I feel carried, part of something whole.

Remembering the Source of the flow, I feel carried instead of cut off.
The deeper layer

Everything comes and goes within the One's flow, and forgetting the Maker leaves us feeling cut off.

The key word here is Hukam. It means the One's will, the way existence really moves. It is less like orders shouted from above and more like the steady current of a river.

Hukmay jug meh aa-i-aa, chalan hukam sanjog — by the Hukam we come into the world, and by the Hukam we leave. Hukmay parpanch pasri-aa — by the Hukam the whole parpanch, the wide world, is spread out. By the Hukam, too, people enjoy life's good things.

Jis no kartaa visrai tiseh vichhorhaa sog — whoever forgets the Creator feels vichhorhaa, separation, and sog, sorrow. It is like a leaf that forgets it's part of the tree. When it remembers, it feels carried and whole again.

A Question to Sit With

When do you feel like part of something bigger than yourself?
