One Gift Above All the Rest

ਜੇ ਤੂ ਤੁਠਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਨਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਵੇਖਾਲਿ ॥
jay too tuthaa kirpaa niDhaan naa doojaa vaykhaal.
And when You are pleased with me, O treasure of mercy, then I do not see any other.
ਏਹਾ ਪਾਈ ਮੂ ਦਾਤੜੀ ਨਿਤ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਖਾ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੩॥
ayhaa paa-ee moo daat-rhee nit hirdai rakhaa samaal. ||3||
Please grant me this blessing, that that I may forever dwell upon You and cherish You within my heart. ||3||

In plain words

When You are near and glad, treasure of kindness, I do not go looking anywhere else — nothing else can compare.

So if I could ask for one gift, it is this: let me keep You in my heart always, remembering and cherishing You every single day.

If I could ask for one gift, it is to keep the One in my heart always.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan is saying: if I could ask for just one gift, it would be to keep You in my heart.

Jay too tuthaa kirpaa niDhaan means "when You are pleased, treasure of kindness." Naa doojaa vaykhaal means "then I don't look for anyone else."

Ayhaa paa-ee moo daat-rhee means "let me get this one little gift." Daat is a gift. Nit hirdai rakhaa samaal means "that I keep You safe in my heart, every day." Hirdai is the heart. Think of a kid offered any toy in the store, who just asks to keep holding a parent's hand. The one thing asked for is remembering, all the time.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for just one thing to keep forever, what would it be?
