Beyond Anything I Could Count

ਕਿਤੀ ਲਖ ਕਰੋੜਿ ਪਿਰੀਏ ਰੋਮ ਨ ਪੁਜਨਿ ਤੇਰਿਆ ॥
kitee lakh karorh piree-ay rom na pujan tayri-aa.
Hundreds of thousands and millions do not equal even one hair of Yours, O my Beloved.
ਤੂ ਸਾਹੀ ਹੂ ਸਾਹੁ ਹਉ ਕਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਾ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰਿਆ ॥੫॥
too saahee hoo saahu ha-o kahi na sakaa gun tayri-aa. ||5||
You are the King of kings; I cannot even describe Your Glorious Praises. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

If I gathered up millions of the most impressive things, they still would not add up to the tiniest part of You.

You are the King of kings, greater than the greatest. My words just run out; I cannot describe all Your goodness.

Some things are too wonderful to fully describe — and that is okay.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan is saying: You are so great that my words run out.

Kitee lakh karorh piree-ay rom na pujan tayri-aa means "many lakhs and crores, Beloved, don't equal one hair of Yours." A lakh is a hundred thousand, and a crore is ten million. Rom is a single hair.

Too saahee hoo saahu means "You are the King of kings." Ha-o kahi na sakaa gun tayri-aa means "I can't say all Your good qualities." Think of standing at the edge of a huge canyon, and all you can say is "wow." That is wonder so big that words can't hold it.

A Question to Sit With

What is something so amazing you have struggled to put it into words?
