Just One Glance

ਸਹੀਆ ਤਊ ਅਸੰਖ ਮੰਞਹੁ ਹਭਿ ਵਧਾਣੀਆ ॥
sahee-aa ta-oo asaNkh manjahu habh vaDhaanee-aa.
Your brides are countless; they are all greater than I am.
ਹਿਕ ਭੋਰੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਦਰਸੁ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਣੀਆ ॥੬॥
hik bhoree nadar nihaal deh daras rang maanee-aa. ||6||
Please bless me with Your Glance of Grace, even for an instant; please bless me with Your Darshan, that I may revel in Your Love. ||6||

In plain words

There are countless others turned toward You, and so many of them seem far better than me.

But I am not asking to be the best. Just one glance of kindness, even for a heartbeat, is enough to fill me with joy.

I do not need to be the best — one glance of kindness is enough.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan is saying: I don't need to be the best. Just one kind look from You is enough.

Sahee-aa ta-oo asankh means "Your companions are countless." Asankh means too many to count. Manjahu habh vaDhaanee-aa means "they all seem greater than me."

Hik bhoree nadar nihaal means "for one little moment, Your glance fills me with joy." Nadar is a glance of grace, and nihaal means overjoyed. Deh daras rang maanee-aa means "let me see You and enjoy Your love." Think of a crowded school play. A kid in the back row spots a parent in the audience who waves. That one wave is all it takes. This is not a contest.

A Question to Sit With

When did a small moment of someone's attention mean the world to you?
