Wandering Without Understanding

ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਤੇ ॥
aavahi jaahi anayk mar mar janmatay.
Many come and go; they die, and die again, and are reincarnated.
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਭੁ ਵਾਦਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਭਰਮਤੇ ॥੫॥
bin boojhay sabh vaad jonee bharmatay. ||5||
Without understanding, they are totally useless, and they wander in reincarnation. ||5||

In plain words

So many of us hurry through life, coming and going, restless and never quite arriving anywhere.

Without understanding what it is all for, all that rushing goes nowhere. It is like walking in circles.

Understanding is what turns aimless wandering into a real journey.
The deeper layer

This one means that without understanding, we just wander in circles.

aavahi jaahi anayk mar mar janmatay — many come and go, born again and again. This is the old teaching of being born many times.

bin boojhay sabh vaad jonee bharmatay — without understanding, it is all vaad, wasted, and they keep wandering. Boojhay means understanding.

That picture of many births also shows a life with no direction. Think of riding a bike round and round a parking lot. You pedal hard but never get anywhere. Understanding gives the ride a direction. It turns wandering into a real journey.

A Question to Sit With

When has understanding why you were doing something changed how it felt?
