After All the Searching, One Thing

ਸੋਧਤ ਸੋਧਤ ਸੋਧਿ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥
soDhat soDhat soDh tat beechaari-aa.
Searching, searching, searching, I have come to understand the essence of reality.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਸਰਪਰ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥੪॥
naam binaa sukh naahi sarpar haari-aa. ||4||
Without the Naam, there is no peace at all, and the mortal will surely fail. ||4||

In plain words

I looked and looked, turning it over from every angle, trying to figure out what is really at the heart of things.

And it came down to something simple: without keeping the One in mind, real peace stays out of reach. Everything else I tried came up short.

After all the searching, it came down to one simple thing.
The deeper layer

This one means that after all the searching, the answer is simple.

soDhat soDhat soDh tat beechaari-aa — searching, searching, searching, I thought hard about the tat. Tat means the essence, the heart of things.

naam binaa sukh naahi sarpar haari-aa — without the Name there is no peace, and a person surely loses.

Think of a puzzle you work on for hours. You try every piece. Then suddenly it clicks, and the answer is plain. The long search lands on one simple truth, and that truth was hard-won.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever worked hard on a big question and found the answer was surprisingly simple?
