Nearer Than the Searching Knows

ਖੋਜਹਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਅਸੰਖ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਨੰਤ ਕੇ ॥
khojeh kot asaNkh bahut anant kay.
Uncounted millions, so many they are endless, search for Him.
ਜਿਸੁ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਨੇੜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
jis bujhaa-ay aap nayrhaa tis hay. ||7||
But only that one, who understands his own self, sees God near at hand. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Countless people search everywhere for the One, looking high and low.

But the One is not far off to be hunted down. The moment I understand my own self, I see that the One was near all along — right here, closer than the search.

The moment I understand myself, I see the One was near all along.
The deeper layer

This one means the One is nearer than all our searching knows.

The first line says countless millions search for the One. Khojeh means they search.

jis bujhaa-ay aap nayrhaa tis hay — the one who is given understanding sees the One near. Nayrhaa means near.

Think of searching the whole house for your phone while you are talking on it. Understanding yourself, more than running far, shows the nearness that was always there.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever searched everywhere for something that was right beside you?
