sanjogee maylaa thaan suhaylaa gunvantee gur gi-aanay.
By good destiny I met Him, and was given a place of rest; through the Guru's Wisdom, I have become virtuous.

I gather lasting Truth and contentment in my lap, and my Beloved is pleased with my truthful speech.

O Nanak, I shall not suffer the pain of separation; through the Guru's Teachings, I merge into the loving embrace of the Lord's Being. ||4||1||

In plain words

I have been given fully to the One, and I will not drift back to my old half-asleep ways. And here is the wonder: the One I feared was far away is right here, close enough to delight in.

The True Beloved wanted me and joined me to Himself, making my understanding whole and clear. By good fortune I met Him and found a place to rest; through the Teacher's wisdom I grew genuinely good inside.

Now I carry lasting truth and contentment, and honest words please the One I love. I will not feel the pain of being torn apart again — through the Teacher's guidance, I settle into the warm embrace of the One.

The One I thought was far away turns out to be the closest thing of all.
The deeper layer

The Chhant closes (||4||1||). baabul ditrhee door — given far away — sounds like leaving, but the twist is rahsee vaykh hadoor: she is thrilled to see the Beloved near at hand. Being sent far turns out to be being brought close. sat santokh sadaa sach palai — truth and contentment gathered in her lap; sach bolai pir bhaa-ay — truthful speech is what pleases the Beloved. The whole seven-part composition ends where the Kuchajee started, but transformed: the one who named her faults is now folded into the embrace, ank samaa-ay. Owning the shortfall was the beginning; being held is the end.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever worried about something ending, only to find it opened into something better?
