Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 111
Verse 1 of 5

When the Time Was Right, I Sang the Name

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
sorath mehlaa 5.
Sorat'h, Fifth Mehl:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਭਾਣਾ ॥
satgur pooray bhaanaa.
When it was pleasing to the Perfect True Guru,
ਤਾ ਜਪਿਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਮਾਣਾ ॥
taa japi-aa naam ramaanaa.
then I chanted the Naam, the Name of the Pervading Lord.
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
gobind kirpaa Dhaaree.
The Lord of the Universe extended His Mercy to me,
ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਾਖੀ ਪੈਜ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
parabh raakhee paij hamaaree. ||1||
and God saved my honor. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the moment was ripe, I let the Name rise up in me and sang it.

Kindness reached me, and my honor was kept safe.

Some good things happen when the time is quietly right, not a moment before.
The deeper layer

satigur poore bhaanaa — when it pleased the Perfect Guru; the singing arises when the ground is ready, gift-like. paij raakhee — honor preserved.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you could not force, that came when the time was right?
