Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 115
Verse 4 of 5

Held the Way a Mother Holds Her Baby

ਜਿਉ ਮਾਤਾ ਬਾਲਿ ਲਪਟਾਵੈ ॥
ji-o maataa baal laptaavai.
Just as the mother holds her baby close,
ਤਿਉ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
ti-o gi-aanee naam kamaavai. ||3||
so does the spiritual person cherish the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Just as a mother holds her baby close and safe, the wise heart holds the Name close.

It is not a duty; it is love wrapping around what it treasures.

You can hold what matters as gently and closely as a mother holds her child.
The deeper layer

jiu maataa baal laptaavai — as a mother clasps her child; tiu giaanee naam kamaavai — so the wise one cherishes the Name. One of Gurbani's tenderest images.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you hold close and would never want to let go of?
