Those who remain wakeful obtain God; through the Word of the Shabad, they conquer their ego.
ਗਿਰਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਤਤ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

Immersed in family life, the Lord's humble servant ever remains detached; he reflects upon the essence of spiritual wisdom.

Serving the True Guru, he finds eternal peace, and he keeps the Lord enshrined in his heart. ||2||

In plain words

My Master, we are Your children, safe in Your shelter. You alone are the true and only One; You Yourself gently dissolve the grasping self.

Those who stay awake and aware find the One, and through the deep song their ego melts.

Right in the middle of a busy family life, the One's people stay light and unhooked inside, thinking on the heart of true understanding. By serving the teaching they find a lasting peace, keeping the One held in the heart.

You don't have to leave ordinary life to find the One — you stay right in it, awake and lightly held.
The deeper layer

The rahaao: ham baarik saran tumaaree — "we are Your children, in Your shelter." A tender, trusting image — not servants trembling but children safe. The precious teaching here is girhee meh sadaa har jan udaasee — "in the midst of family life, the One's servant stays inwardly detached." This is Guru Amar Das's householder ideal, which the project foregrounds: you do not renounce the world to find the One; you live fully in it — job, family, home — while staying inwardly unhooked and awake. Real spirituality happens inside ordinary life, not by fleeing it.

A Question to Sit With

How can you be fully part of your busy family and school life while still keeping a calm center inside?
