In plain words

Take me as Your own, Beloved — whether I am at my best or my worst, I belong to You.

You heard my call and loosened what held me. You wrapped me in honor and held Your servant close, and let my life shine out for all to see.

You belong, on your best days and your worst.
The deeper layer

This one says: good or bad, I am Yours.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Parabh jee-o khasmaanaa kar pi-aaray: dear One, make me Your own. Buray bhalay ham thaaray: good or bad, I am Yours.

Think of a child who comes home with a bad report card. They still belong in that family. Belonging does not wait until we are perfect.

And the One answers. The Guru says his call was heard. BanDhan kaat savaaray: the ties that held him were cut, and he was made beautiful. He was dressed in a sirpaa-o, a robe of honor given to someone welcomed and trusted. The servant was held close, and his life shone out for all to see.

A Question to Sit With

How does it feel to know you belong even when you're not at your best?
