Verse 2 of 4

When the Money Goes, the Crowd Goes

ਦਾਰਾ ਮੀਤ ਪੂਤ ਸਨਬੰਧੀ ਸਗਰੇ ਧਨ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਗੇ ॥
daaraa meet poot sanbanDhee sagray Dhan si-o laagay.
Wives, friends, children and relatives - all are attached to wealth.
ਜਬ ਹੀ ਨਿਰਧਨ ਦੇਖਿਓ ਨਰ ਕਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਛਾਡਿ ਸਭ ਭਾਗੇ ॥੧॥
jab hee nirDhan daykhi-o nar ka-o sang chhaad sabh bhaagay. ||1||
When they see a poor man, they all forsake his company and run away. ||1||

In plain words

Family, friends, the people all around, so much of the world's caring gets tangled up with money and shiny things.

When someone has plenty, others gather close. When the plenty is gone, sometimes the closeness goes too.

So do not measure your worth by the size of the crowd around you. The love that lasts is not counting your coins.

Love that only shows up for your riches was never really about you.
The deeper layer

daaraa meet poot sanbanDhee sagray Dhan si-o laagay — relations attached to wealth; jab hee nirDhan daykhio... sang chhaad sabh bhaagay — when poverty appears the company scatters. A stark observation about affection that is really attachment to advantage. The teaching is not to scorn family but to see clearly which love is conditional and which love is not.

A Question to Sit With

What is a kind of caring that would stay even if everything else went away?
