The Way of the Lord is always such a difficult path; only a few find it, contemplating the Guru.

Imbued with the Lord's Love, and intoxicated with the Shabad, he renounces ego and corruption.

O Nanak, imbued with the Naam, and the Love of the One Lord, he is embellished with the Word of the Shabad. ||4||3||

In plain words

The way of the One is a demanding path — few find it, and they find it by reflecting on the teaching.

Dyed in the One's love and glad with the deep song, such a person lets go of ego and all that harms.

Nanak says: steeped in the Name and in one single love, they are made beautiful by the words of the teaching.

The way of the One is a demanding path — but reflecting on the teaching, you find it, and it makes your life beautiful.
The deeper layer

The close is honest and hopeful together. Har kaa maarag sadaa panth vikh-rhaa — "the way of the One is a difficult path" — Guru Amar Das doesn't pretend it's easy; but ko paa-ay gur veechaaraa, it is found, by reflecting on the teaching. Har kai rang raataa sabday maataa — "dyed in the One's love, glad with the deep song" — and haumai tajay vikaaraa, ego and harm let go. The final word is savaaranhaaraa — "the beautifier": the teaching itself makes the life beautiful. A hard path, but one that ends in a life made lovely.

A Question to Sit With

What is a hard but worthwhile path in your own life that you're glad you're on?
