Verse 1 of 8

He Himself Forgives and Draws Us to the Teaching

sorath mehlaa 3 dutukee.
Sorat'h, Third Mehl, Du-Tukas:
niguni-aa no aapay bakhas la-ay bhaa-ee satgur kee sayvaa laa-ay.
He Himself forgives the worthless, O Siblings of Destiny; He commits them to the service of the True Guru.
satgur kee sayvaa ootam hai bhaa-ee raam naam chit laa-ay. ||1||
Service to the True Guru is sublime, O Siblings of Destiny; through it, one's consciousness is attached to the Lord's Name. ||1||

In plain words

Even when I come with empty hands and nothing to show, the One gently forgives and welcomes me anyway.

And then, kindly, points me toward the teaching, like handing me something good to do.

Living the teaching is a beautiful thing, it quietly ties my heart to the Name.

Grace forgives first, then hands you something good to do.
The deeper layer

niguniaa no aapay bakhas la-ay — He forgives the 'virtueless,' rendered as the empty-handed; satgur kee sayvaa laa-ay — sets them to the Guru's service. sayvaa ootam... raam naam chit laa-ay — service is sublime, attaching the mind to the Name. Grace first, then practice: the Mehl 3 order.

A Question to Sit With

How does it feel to be forgiven before you have even fixed anything?
