A Joy That Never Has to End

mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
sabad ratay ha-umai ga-ee sobhaavantee naar.
Attuned to the Word of the Shabad, the soul-bride is rid of egotism, and she is glorified.
pir kai bhaanai sadaa chalai taa bani-aa seegaar.
If she walks steadily in the way of His Will, then she is adorned with decorations.
Her couch becomes beautiful, and she constantly enjoys her Husband Lord; she obtains the Lord as her Husband.
The Lord does not die, and she never suffers pain; she is a happy soul-bride forever.

O Nanak, the Lord God unites her with Himself; she enshrines love and affection for the Guru. ||2||

In plain words

When a heart is tuned to the Word, the boastful, grabbing self falls away, and something bright and lovely shines out.

Walking gently, in step with the flow of life, becomes its own quiet kind of beauty — no other decoration needed.

Then the heart is at home and full, always close to the Beloved, having found the truest companion there is.

And here is the wonder: this Beloved never leaves and never fades, so this joy never turns to sorrow. It is a happiness that lasts.

Nanak says: the One draws such a heart close, held there by love for the Guru.

Most happy things eventually end — but the joy of being close to the One never has to.
The deeper layer

Gurbani often pictures the soul as a bride and the divine as the ever-present Beloved. Everything turns on naa har marai na kaday dukh laagai — this Beloved "does not die," so the union never ends in loss. Ordinary happiness always seems to run out; this is a joy whose source cannot be taken away. The true seegaar (adornment) is once again inner — walking pir kai bhaanai, in harmony with the flow — not outer display.

A Question to Sit With

Why do you think it feels so good to know something wonderful won't be taken away? What is something in your life that feels steady and safe like that?
