Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 153
Verse 2 of 5

When the Name Touched My Mind, Fear Fled

ਹਮਰਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਗਇਆ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਾ ॥
hamraa bharam ga-i-aa bha-o bhaagaa.
My doubts were removed, and my fear ran away,
ਜਬ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jab raam naam chit laagaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
when my consciousness became attached to the Lord's Name. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My confusion lifted and my fear simply ran off.

It happened the moment my whole attention settled on the Name, on holding the One close in my mind.

When attention rests fully on the One, doubt and fear lose their grip.
The deeper layer

Kabir says his doubt and fear ran away the moment his mind settled on the Name.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

He tells us the result first. Bharam ga-i-aa bha-o bhaagaa: bharam, doubt and confusion, left, and bha-o, fear, ran away. Then he tells us why. Jab raam naam chit laagaa: when my chit, my attention, held on to the Name of the One.

Fear didn't leave because Kabir fought it. It left because his attention found its true home.

Think of a little kid scared of a thunderstorm. You can't argue the thunder away. But when they climb into a parent's lap, the fear just fades. The storm is still there. The child is resting somewhere safe.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your mind settle when it is spinning with worry?
