The One Behind the Whole Great Show

ਬਾਜੀਗਰ ਡੰਕ ਬਜਾਈ ॥
baajeegar dank bajaa-ee.
When the magician beats his tambourine,
ਸਭ ਖਲਕ ਤਮਾਸੇ ਆਈ ॥
sabh khalak tamaasay aa-ee.
everyone comes to see the show.
ਬਾਜੀਗਰ ਸ੍ਵਾਂਗੁ ਸਕੇਲਾ ॥
baajeegar savaaNg sakaylaa.
When the magician winds up his show,
ਅਪਨੇ ਰੰਗ ਰਵੈ ਅਕੇਲਾ ॥੨॥
apnay rang ravai akaylaa. ||2||
then he enjoys its play all alone. ||2||

In plain words

Think of a street performer who beats a drum, and a whole crowd gathers to watch the amazing show.

Then, when the show is over, the performer folds it all up, and it turns out there was really only ever the one performer, enjoying the play alone. The whole wide world is a show like that, and the One is behind all of it.

The whole dazzling world is one performer's play, and the One is behind every part.
The deeper layer

Kabir says the whole world is like one great show, and the One is the performer behind all of it.

Baajeegar dank bajaa-ee: the baajeegar, a street performer or magician, beats a drum. Sabh khalak tamaasay aa-ee: the whole crowd gathers to watch.

Then baajeegar savaang sakaylaa: the performer packs up the whole savaang, the show. Apnay rang ravai akaylaa: and enjoys the play all alone.

Think of a puppet show. Kings, dragons, and heroes fill the stage, all talking to each other. When the curtain falls, one person steps out from behind it. It was one puppeteer all along, giving every voice.

The many things in the world are like that: all the play of the One.

A Question to Sit With

If everyone in a play is really being moved by one storyteller, what does that say about how we are all connected?
