To Truly Live, First Let the Small Self Go

ਜਿਹ ਬਾਝੁ ਨ ਜੀਆ ਜਾਈ ॥
jih baajh na jee-aa jaa-ee.
Without Him, we cannot even live;
ਜਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਘਾਲ ਅਘਾਈ ॥
ja-o milai ta ghaal aghaa-ee.
when we meet Him, then our task is completed.
ਸਦ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਭਲੋ ਕਹਾਂਹੀ ॥
sad jeevan bhalo kahaaNhee.
People say it is good to live forever,
ਮੂਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥
moo-ay bin jeevan naahee. ||1||
but without dying, there is no life. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without the One, we could not even be alive at all. And when we truly meet the One, the work of a whole life feels complete.

People say it would be wonderful to live forever. But Kabir points to a deeper secret: unless the small, separate self quietly lets go, real life has not even begun yet.

Real life begins when the small, separate self quietly lets go.
The deeper layer

Kabir opens with a riddle: moo-ay bin jeevan naahee (without dying, there is no life). This is not about the body, it is jeevan mukti, dying to the ego while fully alive, so that true life can begin. Meeting the One (milai ta ghaal aghaa-ee) is when the soul's long labor is fulfilled.

A Question to Sit With

What might 'letting the small self go' look like, without disappearing as a person at all?
