Do Not Deceive, Even by Accident

ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਭੂਲੇ ਕਪਟੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥

O my mind, do not practice deception, even inadvertently.
ਅੰਤਿ ਨਿਬੇਰਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਜੀਅ ਪਹਿ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ant nibayraa tayray jee-a peh leejai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
In the end, your own soul shall have to answer for its account. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, be careful. Do not slip into deceiving others, not even by accident, not even a little.

In the end, your own heart is the one that has to sit with what you did.

Your own heart lives with what you do, so keep it honest even in small things.
The deeper layer

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line and the center of the shabad: don't deceive, not even by mistake.

Kapat na keejai — do not play tricks. Kabir adds bhoolay, even by slipping, even without meaning to. A small fib can seem harmless. But it still leaves a mark.

Ant nibayraa tayray jee-a peh leejai — in the end, your own soul settles the account. It's like a messy room. You can shove things under the bed so no one sees. But you're the one who sleeps there. Your own heart lives with what you did, so keep it clean and true.

A Question to Sit With

Why does even a small dishonesty sit uncomfortably inside you afterward?
