Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 160
Verse 4 of 4

Your Name Is the Only Jewel I Want

ਮੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਲਬੋ ॥
mai naahee keetaa labo.
I have no greed;
ਇਕੁ ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਮੈ ਫਬੋ ॥
ik naa-o tayraa mai fabo.
Your Name is the only ornament I wish for.
ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
kahi kabeer man maani-aa.
Says Kabir, my mind is pleased and appeased;
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਤਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥੪॥੧੧॥
man maani-aa ta-o har jaani-aa. ||4||11||
now that my mind is pleased and appeased, I have come to know the Lord. ||4||11||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I want to be clear, this is not greed. I am not after piles of things.

The one treasure I truly want to wear, like a jewel, is your Name. Kabir says: now my heart is content and at peace, and in that peace I have come to truly know the One.

The one treasure worth wanting is the Name, and in that contentment the One is known.
The deeper layer

mai naahee keetaa labo (I have no greed), ik naa-o tayraa mai fabo (Your Name is the one ornament that suits me). The modest requests were never greed, they were honesty; the heart's real desire is the Name itself. Closes on man maani-aa ta-o har jaani-aa (the content mind knows the One), Mannai leading to knowing (guidelines).

A Question to Sit With

If you could only truly keep one thing, what would you want it to be?
