Verse 1 of 6

If You Are the Mountain, I Am the Peacock

ਜਉ ਤੁਮ ਗਿਰਿਵਰ ਤਉ ਹਮ ਮੋਰਾ ॥
ja-o tum girivar ta-o ham moraa.
If You are the mountain, Lord, then I am the peacock.
ਜਉ ਤੁਮ ਚੰਦ ਤਉ ਹਮ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਚਕੋਰਾ ॥੧॥
ja-o tum chand ta-o ham bha-ay hai chakoraa. ||1||
If You are the moon, then I am the partridge in love with it. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

If You are the great mountain, then I am the peacock dancing on its slopes.

If You are the bright moon, then I am the little partridge who gazes up all night, in love with Your light.

Who you are shines most beautifully in relationship with the One you love.
The deeper layer

Ravidas begins a garland of loving pairs: mountain and peacock, moon and chakor (the bird said to gaze forever at the moon). Each pair says the same thing, I am who I am because of You. Belonging, not distance, is the whole song.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what brings out the best, most alive version of you?
